with artist Klara Hobza
Immersive Drawing is a process based workshop focusing on the overlap between drawing technique, observation, and perception.
Drawing begins with an intensity of observation. Engagement with the object at hand might be accompanied by an awareness of one’s own breath and posture, the temperature of the room and the surrounding sounds. Gradually focus is recentered on the object, the pencil and the paper; connected in real space and time by this act of observation. The drawing can begin.
In order to translate the act of observation into marks on the paper a toolbox of techniques comes in handy. We will combine technical drawing instruction with exercises that call attention to the physicality of drawing and the mind’s ability to focus. Drawing techniques will address line quality, texture, tonality, mark making and more.
The aim of this workshop is to acquire a diversity of drawing techniques while seeking a wider insight into the meaning of making representational marks on paper. Describing organic objects through their shapes and textures reveals not only their character, but will also reveal one’s relationship to the object and to the act of drawing.
“I love Klara’s teaching style. It was very fundamental, like how to rethink what drawing of a line is, how to express things with something as simple as a line, how breath and body affects how we draw.” – Mona Nasser (Daily Drawing Workshop with Klara Hobza)

Our Online Workshop Format:
Classes meet via Zoom, livestreaming, and include live demos and step by step instructions from the instructor. Participants will do exercises along with the instructor and have the opportunity to ask questions and get feedback during class time. We keep class sizes small and the atmosphere is interactive and intimate. Participants have the option take a little extra time on their own, at home, to complete the exercises or practice at their own pace, although this is not required. Finished work gets uploaded to a Dropbox folder where the instructor will give individual feedback and answer questions in the comments section. Participants can also comment on each others work in a supportive and encouraging environment.
Recordings from each week’s livestreaming session will be made available to participants.
While this workshop will be challenging, it will also be conducted in an inclusive and supportive way – and it will be FUN!
